The 2021 World Internet Conference (WIC) Wuzhen Summit was held in Zhejiang province, China, on Sunday. Zhang Yong, Chairman and CEO of Chinese Internet giant Alibaba, spoke at the plenary meeting.
On behalf of Alibaba, Zhang announced two new strategies around social responsibility that the company would take, namely ESG (Environment, Society and Corporate Governance) and support for Beijing authorities’ recent “common prosperity” drive, saying that Alibaba hopes to truly extend the business boundary and think about how to bring more positive development to society with the power of the tech giant.
In his speech, Zhang unveiled that the company had prepared two specific plans.
First, Alibaba will launch the “Technical Talents Training Plan,” which will help support the development of secondary vocational students at the county level and cultivate their interests and technical abilities. In the future, Alibaba hopes to train more than 200,000 digital talents coming from underdeveloped areas, helping them to become specialized workers.
Second, Alibaba will send special crews to rural areas so as to provide technical support and training for the counties, along with with stronger technical personnel support for the countryside.
When talking about how to help promote common prosperity, Zhang said: “If we can help local people retain talent in the counties and teach them technology-related knowledge, we can gradually raise local industries and bring about sustained and visible development as well as changes.”
“Alibaba has the determination and confidence to build a healthy platform economy. Helping all entrepreneurs improve their ability to start a business, make money, and develop together with the society is our initial intention and direction for more than 20 years. It is also our unswerving and consistent choice for the future.” Zhang added.
